What is Maca?

Peruvian Maca is a unique cruciferous plant native to South America. Today, it is cultivated in the highlands of Peru, Bolivia, and northwest Argentina. Due to its healing properties, the plant is also called Peruvian ginseng.

South Americans use the plant root as food. The Indian tribes that inhabited the mountainous regions of the Andes had used maca as a remedy for several centuries. Today, it is world-known as an efficient superfood with incredible properties. Maca has a positive effect on the functioning of the brain and the nervous system. It was discovered that maca contains lots of essential oils, the A, B, E, and C vitamins, different microelements, and minerals (compounds of copper, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc).

Benefits of Maca

Maca is known for its beneficial properties. It contributes to:

  • improvement of the brain activity;
  • increasing memory, intellectual abilities of kids, adults, and elderly people;
  • improvement of emotional state;
  • increasing the overall tone of the body, its resistance to stress and infections;
  • increasing the body performance.

Maca is ideal for vegetarians, athletes, and everybody leading a healthy and active lifestyle. However, it is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Uses of Maca

Maca should be used according to the recommendations in the instructions for the supplement. Generally, when used in capsules, it is taken 1–2 capsules per day during meals. It is recommended to take the supplement in the first half of the day, otherwise, it might cause trouble falling asleep.

Maca flour can be added to pastries, drinks, or soups. In the place of its origin, the plant is eaten raw, boiled, and dried.
